Patti LaBelle’s Sweet Potato Pies

It may have been one YouTube video that single-handily helped sell out Singer Patti LaBelle’s Sweet Potato Pies.

YouTuber James Wright’s eccentric review of the sweet potato pies went viral. His first bite leaves him speechless, even claiming he turned into Labelle after a taste.

Take a look at the video yourself:

Labelle partnered with Wal-Mart earlier this year, to create her pie brand with her face on the box. The pies hit the stores in September and did fair until James Wright posted his review. Due to the Wright effect, nearly $1 million worth of pies, $3.48 each, were sold in about a week. If you do the math, that is a lot of pies.

The pies have sold out in many Walmarts but the demand is real. Amazon listings have the pies at $35.20 while some eBay prices go to $75. The question becomes how badly do you want pie now.

Thankfully, there is an alternative: cook it yourself. NBC’s Today got LaBelle’s homemade pie recipe, which can be found here: Patti LaBelle’s Sweet Potato Pie Recipe

LaBelle is not only a legendary singer, she’s a New York Times bestselling author. She released several cookbooks including “LaBelle Cuisine: Recipes to Sing About” and “Recipes for the Good Life.”

She took her cooking passion to another level with a cooking special on Cooking Channel, “Patti LaBelle’s Place,” which aired on September. The premiere features LaBelle’s cooking braised kale for Whoopi Goldberg, who apparently doesn’t eat vegetables.

“All through my life, I was cooking, so the show was inevitable. Having my own cooking show. Because I cook so well, and I’m not bragging, not patting myself on the back, but I cook, I think, better than I sing.” LaBelle said. “I cook my face off, honey.”

Labelle told Rolling Stone during an interview discussing her inspiration for a cooking show. Click here for the Patti LaBelle Rolling Store Interview
